Revelation 13:9
“If any man have an ear, let him hear.”
Context:Revelation is the last book of the Bible and is filled with prophetic visions given to the apostle John. This verse comes from a passage that describes the rise of a beast from the sea, which is often interpreted as representing a powerful political and religious system. In the preceding verses, the beast is given authority to make war against the saints and to overcome them.
The Call to Hear:The phrase “If any man have an ear, let him hear” is a common expression used by Jesus throughout the Gospels. It is an invitation to pay attention and understand the message being conveyed. In the book of Revelation, this phrase is often used as a call to discernment and spiritual understanding.
Universal Application:The verse implies that the message conveyed is not restricted to a particular group but is applicable to anyone who has ears to hear. This emphasises the importance of listening and understanding the prophetic message contained in the book of Revelation.
Spiritual Discernment:Having an “ear to hear” goes beyond mere physical hearing. It speaks to the need for spiritual discernment and attentiveness to God’s Word. In various instances in the Gospels, Jesus encourages His disciples to understand the deeper spiritual meaning behind His teachings, parables, and prophetic utterances.
Application:This verse reminds believers of the need to be attentive to God’s Word, especially when it comes to prophetic messages. It encourages us to seek spiritual discernment and understanding, recognising that the book of Revelation contains important insights and warnings for the Church and the world.
The Importance of Studying Revelation:The book of Revelation is rich in symbolism and imagery, making it challenging to interpret. However, its central message revolves around the ultimate victory of Christ over evil and the assurance of His second coming. By studying Revelation, believers can gain a deeper understanding of God’s plan for the future and find encouragement in the midst of trials and tribulations.
