Revelation 14:13

And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.

Revelation 14:13 (KJV)

John receives this revelation while exiled on Patmos, and the voice from heaven commands him to write. The command to write underscores the certainty and importance of the message. The blessing is pronounced “from henceforth,” indicating that from that time onward, especially amid the end-time events described in Revelation, those who die in the Lord are blessed.

Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord: This phrase refers to believers who are in a state of faith and relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ at the moment of their physical death. It emphasizes the importance of a personal relationship with Jesus and remaining faithful to Him until the end. The Spirit confirms this blessing with “Yea,” adding divine assurance.

Rest from their labours: Those who die in the Lord will experience rest from their labors. This rest is not idleness but a cessation of earthly toil, struggles, and challenges. It signifies release from the hardships of this world and entrance into eternal peace in the presence of God.

Their works do follow them: The works of those who die in the Lord follow them into eternity. This suggests that the impact and fruit of their labor for God’s kingdom endure beyond physical death. While salvation is not earned through works, believers are called to live lives of faithfulness and obedience, and their actions have lasting effects and rewards in eternity.

This verse reassures believers that death, for those in Christ, is a blessed event—not the end but a transition into eternal rest and glory. It encourages steadfast faith and continued service, knowing that their works have eternal significance. It also offers comfort to those who have lost loved ones in the Lord, assuring them that their labor was not in vain and that they can find solace in the promise of eternal rest and the legacy left by their departed loved ones.
