Revelation 17:13

These haue one minde, and shall giue their power and strength vnto the beast. Revelation 17:13 (KJV)

Revelation 17 presents a vivid vision in which a woman identified as the “great harlot” sits upon a scarlet beast. The angel who explains the vision to John describes the beast as having seven heads and ten horns, symbols that represent political and religious powers. In the preceding verse, the ten horns are identified as ten kings who receive authority for a short time, as expressed in the statement, “And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these are ten kings, which have received no power; but themselves receive authority as a bondservant for a season.”

The phrase “These have one mind” refers to those ten kings or rulers. Though each king holds individual authority, the text indicates that they unite in purpose, forming a cooperative alliance. This unity of mind suggests a shared agenda among the ten rulers, despite their distinct realms of influence.

The passage continues that the ten kings “shall give their power and strength unto the beast.” In the interpretive framework of Revelation, the beast represents a powerful and oppressive system that stands in opposition to God’s kingdom. By transferring their authority and resources to the beast, the ten kings actively support an entity that seeks to undermine divine authority.

Scholars acknowledge that the symbolism in Revelation is complex and admits a range of perspectives. Common themes include a political and religious alliance in which the ten kings willingly lend their authority to the beast, reflecting a collaboration between secular and religious forces to dominate the world. Another view sees the beast as a worldly power that opposes God’s principles, with the ten kings aligning themselves with this antagonistic system. The reference to “for one hour” in verse 12 is often understood as indicating a brief, temporary alliance that will ultimately be broken by God’s intervention.

Overall, the broader message of Revelation 17:13, within the context of the entire book, points to a convergence of political and religious powers working together to oppose God’s kingdom. Though this alliance may wield considerable influence for a limited period, the text affirms that God’s sovereignty and authority will ultimately prevail. Because interpretations of Revelation vary, it is prudent to consult multiple commentaries and seek guidance from trusted biblical scholars when studying this prophetic passage.
