Revelation 18:2

Posted on 18 May at 14:19

“And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.”

Context:The book of Revelation is the last book of the New Testament and is attributed to the apostle John. It contains a series of visions and prophecies given to John while he was exiled on the island of Patmos. Revelation 18 specifically focuses on the fall of Babylon, which is portrayed as a symbolic representation of a corrupt and oppressive world system that opposes God and persecutes His people.

Symbolic Language:In Revelation, symbolic language is used extensively to convey spiritual truths. Here, Babylon is not referring to the literal ancient city of Babylon but represents a metaphorical entity associated with wickedness and rebellion against God. It represents a system or a city that embodies human pride, materialism, immorality, and idolatry.

The Fall of Babylon:The verse declares that Babylon the great has fallen, emphasizing its downfall and destruction. This imagery suggests that the wicked world system, characterized by its spiritual corruption, will eventually face judgment and be utterly destroyed. It is a reflection of God’s justice and His victory over evil.

The Habitation of Devils and Foul Spirits:The verse further describes the fallen state of Babylon as a habitation of devils and a hold of every foul spirit. This indicates that Babylon has become a dwelling place for demonic forces and spiritual darkness. It signifies the pervasive presence of evil and the influence of demonic powers within this corrupt system.

Unclean and Hateful Birds:The verse concludes by comparing Babylon to a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. This metaphorical language portrays the presence of wickedness and impurity within Babylon. Just as unclean and hateful birds are undesirable and represent defilement, so does the spiritual condition of Babylon.

Overall, Revelation 18:2 conveys a powerful message of the eventual downfall and destruction of a corrupt and oppressive world system that opposes God. It serves as a reminder of God’s judgment on wickedness and the triumph of righteousness. This passage encourages believers to remain faithful to God and avoid becoming entangled in the allure and deceit of worldly systems that are contrary to His will.
