And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire: this is the second death. Revelation 20:14 (KJV)

Context: The book of Revelation is a prophetic vision given to the apostle John, providing insight into the final events of human history and the ultimate victory of God over evil. In Revelation 20, John describes the thousand‑year reign of Christ, commonly called the Millennium, and then details the final judgment that follows that period.

Death and Hell: In this verse, “death and hell” are personified entities that symbolize the ultimate defeat of all forms of evil. Death refers to physical death, the cessation of earthly life that every person experiences because of sin. Hell, translated from the Greek “Hades,” denotes the realm of the dead where all people await resurrection—both the righteous and the unrighteous—and thus represents the power of sin, evil, and separation from God.

The Lake of Fire: The passage states that death and hell are cast into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is a symbol of eternal judgment and the final destination of those who reject God and His salvation. It represents the ultimate punishment for sin and rebellion against the holy God.

The Second Death: The casting of death and hell into the lake of fire is identified as the “second death.” The first death is the physical death all humans undergo as a consequence of sin. The second death denotes eternal separation from God and eternal punishment in the lake of fire—a spiritual death that signifies the final, irreversible destiny of those who have rejected God’s offer of salvation.

Implications: This verse underscores the final victory of God over death, hell, and all evil. It assures believers that the power of sin, death, and separation from God will be ultimately abolished. The lake of fire serves as a solemn warning to reject evil and to embrace God’s salvation in Christ Jesus, highlighting the seriousness of our choices in this life and the eternal consequences they carry.

Application: Revelation 20:14 encourages believers to live in the light of eternity, seeking to align their lives with God’s will and purposes. It reminds us of the urgency to share the message of salvation with others, that they may escape the second death and experience eternal life with God.
