Revelation 21:4

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”

This verse comes from the Book of Revelation, which is the final book in the New Testament. It is a prophetic and symbolic book written by the Apostle John, who received visions from God while exiled on the island of Patmos. Revelation contains messages of encouragement, warnings, and promises regarding the end times and the ultimate victory of God’s Kingdom.

Revelation 21:4 presents a beautiful image of the future hope and restoration that awaits believers. Let’s break down the verse and explore its key themes and implications.

God’s compassion and comfort:The verse begins with the assurance that God Himself will wipe away every tear from the eyes of His people. This imagery depicts the personal care, tenderness, and compassion of God towards His children. It signifies that God will bring an end to all causes of grief and distress that His people have experienced in their earthly lives.

The elimination of death:The verse goes on to declare that in the new heavens and the new earth, there will be no more death. This promise is significant because death is a consequence of sin and has been a universal human experience since the Fall. The absence of death in the future kingdom indicates the complete victory over sin and the restoration of eternal life.

Freedom from sorrow, crying, and pain:The verse further emphasizes that in the new order, there will be no more sorrow, crying, or pain. These elements have plagued humanity throughout history and are often associated with suffering and the brokenness of the world. The promise of their absence highlights the complete transformation and renewal that will occur in God’s Kingdom. It is a picture of true joy, peace, and wholeness.

The passing of former things:The verse concludes by affirming that the former things, which include the effects of sin and the brokenness of the present world, will pass away. This statement underscores the radical transformation and renewal that will take place when God establishes His eternal Kingdom. The old order will be replaced by a new order characterized by righteousness, holiness, and the presence of God.

Overall, Revelation 21:4 paints a vivid picture of the future hope and restoration that believers in Christ can look forward to. It assures us that God, in His infinite love and power, will wipe away every tear, eradicate death, sorrow, crying, and pain, and bring about a new and glorious order where righteousness and peace reign. This verse provides comfort, encouragement, and a vision of the ultimate fulfilment of God’s redemptive plan.
