Exodus 28:5

Posted on 26 April 2025
Listen to this article

“And they shall take gold, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen.”

Context:Exodus 28 is a chapter that provides detailed instructions to Moses regarding the garments and vestments to be worn by Aaron, the high priest, and his sons, who would serve in the tabernacle. These garments were not only practical but also held significant symbolic and spiritual meanings.

Materials and Colors:In this verse, God instructs the Israelites to use specific materials and colors to make the high priest’s garments. These materials include gold, blue, purple, scarlet, and fine linen. Each of these elements has its significance and symbolic representation:

  • Gold: Gold is a precious metal and often symbolizes purity, divinity, and the glory of God. It reflects the holiness and sacredness of the priesthood, highlighting their unique and set-apart role in serving God and representing the people before Him.
  • Blue: The color blue was associated with the sky and heaven, representing the divine nature of God. It reminds the priests of their heavenly calling and the need to stay connected to God in their service.
  • Purple: Purple is a color associated with royalty and honor. By including purple in the high priest’s garments, it emphasizes their position of authority and the honor bestowed upon them by God.
  • Scarlet: Scarlet is a rich red color that can symbolize both blood and royalty. It may serve as a reminder of the sacrificial system and the need for atonement for sin. Additionally, it highlights the high priest’s role in interceding for the people before God.
  • Fine Linen: Fine linen is a material known for its quality and purity. It signifies the holiness and righteousness that the priests should exemplify in their lives and service.

Spiritual Lessons:The choice of materials and colors in the high priest’s garments offers several spiritual lessons for us today:

  • Divine Calling:Like the high priest, believers are called to be a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9). The choice of materials in the garments reminds us that we are chosen and set apart by God to be holy and to serve Him faithfully.
  • Purity and Holiness:Fine linen and gold represent purity and holiness, teaching us the importance of living a holy life that reflects God’s character and standards.
  • Heavenly Focus:The color blue points to our heavenly citizenship and the need to set our minds on things above (Colossians 3:2) while carrying out our earthly responsibilities.
  • Sacrificial Atonement:The scarlet color reminds us of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, shedding His blood for the forgiveness of sins. As believers, we are called to embrace His sacrifice and live in a manner worthy of His calling (Ephesians 4:1).
  • Servant-Leadership:The garments of the high priest symbolize servant-leadership. As followers of Christ, we are called to serve others with humility, just as Jesus exemplified (Mark 10:45).

In conclusion, Exodus 28:5 not only provides instructions for the physical garments of the high priest but also carries significant spiritual lessons for believers today. It reminds us of our divine calling, the need for purity and holiness, our heavenly focus, the sacrificial atonement of Christ, and the importance of serving others with humility and honor.
