Exodus 28:36

Listen to this article

“And thou shalt make a plate of pure gold, and grave upon it, like the engravings of a signet, Holiness To The Lord.”

This verse is part of the detailed instructions that God gave to Moses for creating the priestly garments. The focus here is on the high priest’s attire, particularly the plate of gold that was to be worn on his turban or forehead.

The High Priest’s Plate of Gold:The verse begins with God instructing Moses to create a plate of pure gold. This plate would be a small, rectangular piece of gold, serving as a type of “crown” or headpiece for the high priest’s turban.

Engravings like a Signet:The plate of gold was to be engraved with intricate designs, similar to the engravings found on a signet ring. Signet rings in ancient times were used as symbols of authority, and the engravings on them often carried personal or significant emblems. Here, the engravings on the gold plate signify the high priest’s sacred position and authority before the Lord.

“Holiness To The Lord”:The most critical element of the inscription on the gold plate is the phrase “Holiness To The Lord.” This inscription served as a constant reminder of the high priest’s sanctified role and the absolute holiness required in approaching God’s presence. It emphasized the priest’s unique position as a mediator between the people and God, symbolizing the consecration and purity required for anyone who would stand before the Almighty.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • Holiness and Consecration:The phrase “Holiness To The Lord” carries significant spiritual significance. It reminds us that those who serve God should be set apart and consecrated for His purposes. As believers, we are called to be a holy priesthood (1 Peter 2:5) and a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9), dedicated to serving and glorifying God.
  • Mediatorship of Christ:The high priest in the Old Testament served as a mediator between God and the people, offering sacrifices for their sins. In the New Testament, Jesus Christ became the ultimate High Priest and Mediator for humanity, offering Himself as the perfect sacrifice for our sins (Hebrews 9:11-14). The inscription “Holiness To The Lord” points to Christ’s role as the Holy One who intercedes on our behalf before God.
  • The Importance of Symbols:In the Old Testament, God often used tangible symbols and rituals to convey spiritual truths. The gold plate with the engraved inscription was a physical representation of the high priest’s sacred duty and God’s demand for holiness. Similarly, the New Testament uses various symbols like baptism and the Lord’s Supper to remind us of profound spiritual realities.
  • Our Identity in Christ:Just as the gold plate bore the inscription “Holiness To The Lord,” we, as followers of Christ, are called to bear His name and represent Him in the world. Our lives should reflect His holiness, love, and grace to those around us, making us distinct and set apart for His service.

In conclusion, Exodus 28:36 teaches us about the importance of holiness, consecration, and symbolism in our relationship with God. It points to the ultimate High Priest, Jesus Christ, who mediates on our behalf and calls us to live lives dedicated to God’s service and glory.
