Exodus 29:25

Listen to this article

“And thou shalt receive them of their hands and burn them upon the altar for a burnt offering, for a sweet savour before the Lord: it is an offering made by fire unto the Lord.”

Exodus 29:25 is part of the detailed instructions given by God to Moses regarding the consecration of the priests and the sanctification of the tabernacle.

In this particular verse, we see the specific instruction concerning the offerings that the priests were to make on the altar.

Context: The book of Exodus primarily deals with the deliverance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and the establishment of the covenant between God and His chosen people. In chapter 29, God instructs Moses on how Aaron and his sons, the priests, are to be consecrated to serve in the tabernacle.

The Altar of Burnt Offering: In verse 25, the “altar” refers to the Altar of Burnt Offering, which was an essential piece of furniture in the tabernacle.

The altar was a place where various sacrifices were offered to God, symbolizing atonement for sin, dedication, and worship.

Receiving the Offerings: The verse begins with “And thou shalt receive them of their hands.” This phrase indicates that the priests were to take the offerings from the people who brought them and then proceed to offer them on the altar.

Burnt Offering: The offering mentioned here is a “burnt offering.” The burnt offering was one of the most common and significant sacrifices in the Israelite worship system. It involved the complete burning of the entire animal on the altar, representing total surrender and dedication to God.

Sweet Savour Before the Lord: The burnt offering was said to be a “sweet savour before the Lord.” This phrase implies that the offering was pleasing and acceptable to God. It was a symbol of obedience and devotion from the worshipper, and it pleased God when it was offered with a sincere heart.

Offering Made by Fire unto the Lord: The verse concludes by stating that the burnt offering was an “offering made by fire unto the Lord.” This phrase emphasizes the sacrificial nature of the offering. The offering, once placed on the altar, was consumed by fire, symbolizing its transformation into a gift for God.

Key Takeaways: Exodus 29:25 highlights the significance of offerings and sacrifices in the Israelite religious practices. The burnt offering symbolized complete dedication and surrender to God, and it was a pleasing aroma to the Lord when offered with sincerity. The act of offering sacrifices was an important part of worship, demonstrating the Israelites’ faith and obedience to God’s commands.

As we study this verse, it’s essential to understand the cultural and historical context in which these instructions were given. The sacrificial system described in Exodus served as a foreshadowing of the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who became the perfect and final offering for the forgiveness of sins.

As Christians, we no longer offer animal sacrifices but offer ourselves as living sacrifices, wholly devoted to God (Romans 12:1-2).
