Exodus 33:8

Posted on 13 May 2025
Listen to this article

“And it came to pass, when Moses went out unto the tabernacle, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he was gone into the tabernacle.”

Exodus 33:8 is a part of the larger narrative in the book of Exodus that recounts the events after the Israelites’ disobedience with the golden calf (Exodus 32). In this verse, we see Moses going out to the tabernacle, and the people reacting to his departure.

Context:Before diving into this specific verse, it’s essential to understand the context. The Israelites had recently committed a grave sin by making and worshipping a golden calf as an idol. This angered God, and He threatened to consume the people in His wrath. In response, Moses interceded on behalf of the people and sought God’s forgiveness and presence. Exodus 33:7 sets the scene by stating that whenever Moses went out to the tabernacle, the people would watch him and stand at their tent doors, likely in awe and curiosity.

The Tabernacle:The tabernacle was a portable sanctuary or tent of meeting that God instructed the Israelites to construct. It served as a place where God’s presence dwelt among the people. In the context of Exodus 33, the tabernacle became a focal point for Moses to commune with God, seeking His guidance and favour.

Moses as an Intercessor:Throughout the book of Exodus, we see Moses as a mediator and intercessor between God and the people of Israel. He had a unique relationship with God, and his role was to represent the people before God and communicate God’s commands to the people. In this verse, Moses going out to the tabernacle likely indicates him seeking God’s face, praying, and interceding on behalf of the repentant nation after their sin with the golden calf.

People’s Reaction:The people’s response to Moses going out to the tabernacle reflects their recognition of Moses’ special relationship with God. They stand at their tent doors, looking after him, as they are aware that he is engaging with God on their behalf. Their posture of watching him indicates respect, anticipation, and perhaps a sense of longing to experience God’s presence themselves.

Application:As we reflect on Exodus 33:8, we can draw some essential lessons. First, Moses’ intercessory role reminds us of the importance of prayer and seeking God’s face when we face challenges, sin, or difficult situations. Second, the people’s response to Moses highlights the significance of leadership and spiritual guidance within the community of believers. Lastly, the tabernacle, as a place of God’s presence, foreshadows the concept of seeking God’s presence and dwelling in His presence through prayer, worship, and faith in Jesus Christ.

In summary, Exodus 33:8 provides us with a glimpse of Moses’ role as an intercessor, the people’s response to his engagement with God, and the significance of seeking God’s presence in our lives. It offers valuable lessons for us to deepen our relationship with God and seek His guidance in our daily lives.
