Exodus 33:12
And Moses saide vnto the Lord, See, thou sayest vnto mee, Bring vp this people, and thou hast not let mee know whome thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I knowe thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight. Exodus 33:12 (KJV)
In the preceding chapters the Israelites committed the grave sin of idolatry by worshipping a golden calf while Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments. As a result of this disobedience God’s anger burned against the people and He threatened to consume them in His wrath. Moses interceded on behalf of the people, pleading with God not to destroy them entirely. In response God relented from destroying the Israelites completely but said He would not go up with them into the Promised Land because their stiff‑neckedness might bring judgment; He promised to send an angel to lead them instead (Exodus 33:1‑3).
Moses’ Relationship with God: In this verse we see Moses engaging in a conversation with God. Their relationship is personal and intimate, as indicated by God speaking directly to Moses, knowing Moses by name and finding grace in His sight. This highlights a profound level of familiarity and communication. As believers we can learn the importance of developing an intimate relationship with God through prayer, worship, and obedience.
Moses’s Boldness in Prayer: Moses expresses his concerns to God without hesitation. He asks who will go with the people, showing boldness and a desire to understand God’s plan for the journey ahead. As Christians we can come before God with our questions, doubts, and fears, trusting that He welcomes our honesty and will guide us through life’s uncertainties.
God’s Faithfulness and Grace: Despite the Israelites’ rebellion and unfaithfulness, God extends His grace to Moses and the people. He acknowledges that He knows Moses by name, has found grace in His sight, and recognizes Moses’ faithfulness, promising to continue leading them, though He will do so through an angel (Exodus 33:2‑3). This demonstrates God’s loving and patient nature, and we can take comfort in knowing that His grace is available to us no matter how many times we may falter.
Seeking God’s Presence: The passage also reveals Moses’ longing for God’s presence. He recognizes the importance of having God accompany them on their journey through the wilderness and into the Promised Land.
