Exodus 33:17

Listen to this article

“And the Lord said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.”

Context:Exodus 33 is a pivotal chapter in the Bible, where the relationship between God, Moses, and the Israelites is deeply explored. Prior to this verse, the Israelites had sinned by creating and worshipping a golden calf while Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments from God. As a result of this rebellion, God was angry and considered not going with the Israelites on their journey to the Promised Land.

However, Moses interceded on behalf of the people, pleading with God not to abandon them. In verses 12-16, Moses asked God to show him His ways, so that he and the Israelites could find favour in God’s sight. Moses wanted to be assured that God’s presence would go with them, distinguishing them from all other people on the Earth.

  • God’s Response to Moses: In verse 17, God responds to Moses’ request affirmatively. He assures Moses that He will do what Moses has asked because Moses has found grace in God’s sight. This means that God has shown favour and kindness to Moses, and this favour is a key reason why God is willing to grant his request.
  • Knowing Moses by Name: God’s statement, “I know thee by name,” signifies a personal and intimate relationship. In the biblical context, knowing someone’s name carries more profound implications than mere identification. It represents knowing the person’s character, nature, and essence. God’s personal knowledge of Moses indicates a close and unique relationship between the two.
  • The Significance of God’s Grace: God’s response to Moses highlights the importance of grace. Grace is God’s unmerited favour and kindness towards humanity. It is not something earned or deserved, but a gift freely given by God. Moses found grace in God’s sight, which means that God chose to show kindness to Moses even though he, too, was a flawed human being. This grace not only secured God’s presence with the Israelites but also reminds us of God’s willingness to be in a relationship with His people, despite their shortcomings.
  • Application for Believers: As believers, we can draw lessons from this passage. Firstly, it reminds us of the power of intercession. Moses stood in the gap for his people, advocating for their well-being and relationship with God. We, too, can intercede for others in prayer, seeking God’s mercy and grace on their behalf.
  • Seeking God’s Presence: Moses’ desire for God’s presence should inspire us to seek an intimate relationship with God. Knowing God intimately allows us to understand His ways, receive His guidance, and experience His transforming power in our lives.
  • The Assurance of God’s Presence: God’s promise to go with Moses and the Israelites is a reassurance of His faithfulness. Similarly, as believers, we have the assurance that God will never leave nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). Even in challenging times, we can trust in His abiding presence.

In conclusion, Exodus 33:17 teaches us about the significance of God’s grace, the importance of seeking God’s presence, and the power of intercessory prayer. It also emphasises the personal and intimate relationship God desires to have with His people. As we read and reflect on this passage, may it encourage us to deepen our relationship with God, knowing that we, too, have found grace in His sight through Jesus Christ.
