Exodus 36:6

Posted on 27 May 2025
Listen to this article

“And Moses gave commandment, and they caused it to be proclaimed throughout the camp, saying, Let neither man nor woman make any more work for the offering of the sanctuary. So the people were restrained from bringing.”

Context:In earlier chapters of Exodus, God gave specific instructions to Moses on how to build the Tabernacle, which included the Ark of the Covenant, the Table for the Showbread, the Golden Lampstand, and other items for worship and sacrifice. The Israelites willingly offered their materials and skills for the construction of the Tabernacle, and they gave generously.

Moses’ Commandment:In Exodus 36:2-5, we see that the people brought more than enough materials for the construction of the Tabernacle. They brought so much that the artisans had to tell Moses that they had more than they needed (Exodus 36:5).

Proclamation Throughout the Camp:In response to the overwhelming abundance of contributions, Moses issues a commandment to the people. He proclaims throughout the camp that they should stop bringing additional offerings for the sanctuary.

Purpose of the Proclamation:The purpose of this proclamation was to prevent the people from over-contributing to the point of excess. It was an act of restraint to ensure that the resources were used wisely and efficiently for the construction of the Tabernacle.

Lessons from Exodus 36:6:

  • Generosity and Willingness to Contribute:The Israelites’ willingness to give freely and generously for the construction of the Tabernacle sets an example for us. It teaches us the value of giving back to God and supporting His work. It’s a reminder that we should be willing to offer our time, talents, and resources for God’s kingdom purposes.
  • Wise Stewardship:While the Israelites were generous, Moses’ commandment also highlights the importance of wise stewardship. It is essential to manage resources prudently and ensure that they are used effectively for God’s purposes. This principle applies to all areas of life, not just offerings to the sanctuary.
  • Contentment and Gratitude:The fact that the people brought more than enough offerings shows their eagerness to contribute to the Lord’s work. However, they also needed to be content with what was already given. Contentment and gratitude for what God has provided are essential attitudes for believers.

Application:As we reflect on Exodus 36:6, we can apply these principles in our lives. We should embrace a spirit of generosity, being willing to give back to God and support His work. At the same time, we must practice wise stewardship, ensuring that resources are used efficiently and for the glory of God. Lastly, we should cultivate contentment and gratitude, recognizing God’s abundant blessings in our lives.

In summary, Exodus 36:6 teaches us about the beauty of the Israelites’ generosity and their eagerness to contribute to the construction of the Tabernacle. It also highlights the importance of wise stewardship and contentment as we offer our resources for God’s purposes today.
