Exodus 36:19

Listen to this article

“And he made a covering for the tent of rams’ skins dyed red, and a covering of badgers’ skins above that.”

Context:Exodus 36 is part of the larger narrative of the construction of the Tabernacle, which was a portable sanctuary for worship and a visible symbol of God’s presence among the Israelites during their time in the wilderness. The Tabernacle was to be built according to the precise instructions given to Moses by God on Mount Sinai.

In this specific verse, we see a description of the coverings used for the Tabernacle. Two types of coverings are mentioned:

  • Covering of Rams’ Skins Dyed Red:This was the innermost layer of covering for the Tabernacle, made from the skins of rams that were dyed red. It provided protection for the sacred furnishings and elements inside the Tabernacle. The colour red may have symbolised both the significance of blood in atonement and the idea of royalty or divine authority.
  • Covering of Badgers’ Skins:Above the covering of rams’ skins dyed red, there was another layer made from badgers’ skins. The term “badgers’ skins” used in the KJV has been a subject of debate among scholars, as the original Hebrew word “tachash” is not precisely identified. Some scholars suggest it could refer to a specific type of animal skin, while others propose it might be a type of leather, perhaps dyed or treated for durability.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • Symbolism of Protection:The coverings of the Tabernacle teach us about God’s desire to protect and preserve what is sacred. In a spiritual sense, God provides a covering of protection for His people. Throughout the Bible, we see God’s promises of protection for those who trust in Him (Psalm 91:4, Psalm 121:7-8).
  • Symbolism of Atonement:The use of red in the rams’ skins covering could symbolise the concept of atonement. In the Old Testament, the shedding of animal blood was an essential element in making atonement for sin. This points forward to the ultimate atonement provided through the blood of Jesus Christ, which cleanses us from all sin (Hebrews 9:22, 1 John 1:7).
  • Layers of Worship:The Tabernacle had multiple layers of coverings, indicating the gradual progression of access to God’s presence. This reminds us of the importance of seeking God in layers of worship – through prayer, praise, thanksgiving, and reflection on His Word. As we draw near to Him, He draws near to us (James 4:8).
  • God’s Precise Instructions:The construction of the Tabernacle required adherence to God’s detailed instructions. It shows us the importance of obeying God’s commands and doing things according to His will. In our own lives, we are called to be obedient to God’s Word and follow His guidance (John 14:15, James 1:22-25).

Application:As we study this passage, we can learn to appreciate God’s provision and protection for His people. We can also reflect on the significance of atonement and the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ for our sins. Additionally, it reminds us to approach God with reverence and seek Him earnestly through prayer, worship, and obedience to His Word.

Remember, while studying the Bible, it’s essential to seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit to gain deeper insights and personal application from the text.
