Exodus 36:21

Listen to this article

“The length of a board was ten cubits, and the breadth of a board one cubit and a half.”

Context:The book of Exodus is the second book of the Bible and is an essential part of the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Old Testament). It continues the narrative of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land under the leadership of Moses. In this particular chapter, Exodus 36, the focus is on the construction of the tabernacle-a portable sanctuary where God’s presence would dwell among the Israelites during their wanderings in the wilderness.

Explanation:Exodus 36:21 describes one of the components used in constructing the tabernacle. The verse mentions the dimensions of a wooden board that was used as a building material. Each board was ten cubits (approximately 15 feet or 4.5 meters) in length and one cubit and a half (approximately 27 inches or 68.5 centimeters) in breadth.

The Tabernacle:The tabernacle was a sacred tent consisting of two main parts: the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place (also known as the Holy of Holies). It was divided by a thick veil, and various pieces of furniture and implements were used in its construction. The boards described in this verse were part of the framework for the walls of the tabernacle.

Precise Instructions:The construction of the tabernacle was not a haphazard process. God gave Moses detailed instructions regarding its design, dimensions, and materials to be used. This level of precision underscores the importance of creating a sacred space for God’s presence among His people.

Symbolism:The tabernacle and its components held symbolic significance. It served as a representation of God’s dwelling place among His people, signifying His desire to be close to them. The materials used, including the wooden boards, represent the willingness and commitment of the people to participate in this divine project.

Unity and Cooperation:The construction of the tabernacle required a collective effort. The entire community of Israelites was involved, and each individual’s contribution played a crucial role in its completion. This passage highlights the importance of unity and cooperation among God’s people to accomplish His purposes.

Application:The verse can teach us several valuable lessons for our lives today:

  • Obedience to God’s Instructions:Just as God provided precise instructions for the tabernacle’s construction, He provides guidance for our lives through His Word. Obedience to God’s commands and following His guidance leads to blessings and the manifestation of His presence in our lives.
  • Commitment and Sacrifice:The willingness of the Israelites to contribute their time, skills, and resources to build the tabernacle demonstrates the importance of sacrificial giving and commitment in serving God and His Kingdom.
  • Unity in the Body of Christ:Like the collective effort required to build the tabernacle, unity among believers is essential for the advancement of God’s Kingdom on earth. We are called to work together in love, supporting and encouraging one another in our individual roles within the body of Christ.
  • God’s Presence Among His People:The construction of the tabernacle reminds us that God desires to be close to His people. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we become the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Therefore, we should live in a way that reflects God’s presence within us, being a light to the world and drawing others to Him.

In conclusion, Exodus 36:21 may appear to be a simple description of construction materials, but it holds significant spiritual insights that can guide us in our relationship with God and fellow believers. Through obedience, commitment, unity, and recognizing God’s presence among us, we can grow in faith and fulfill our purpose as His people.
