Exodus 37:5

Listen to this article

“And he put the staves into the rings by the sides of the ark, to bear the ark.”

This verse is part of the larger context of the construction of the Tabernacle, a portable sanctuary that the Israelites built in the wilderness, as instructed by God. The Tabernacle served as a place of worship and symbolized God’s presence among His people.

The Ark of the Covenant:The “ark” mentioned in this verse refers to the Ark of the Covenant. This was a sacred box made of acacia wood and overlaid with pure gold, containing the tablets of the Ten Commandments, a jar of manna, and Aaron’s rod that budded. The Ark represented the presence of God among the Israelites and played a significant role in their journey and worship.

Divine Instruction:The construction of the Ark and its placement in the Tabernacle were carried out according to God’s precise instructions to Moses on Mount Sinai. This highlights the importance of obedience and attention to detail when it comes to serving and worshiping God. As believers, we should seek to follow God’s instructions in our lives and ministries.

Staves and Rings:The “staves” were long poles made of acacia wood and covered in gold. The rings were golden hoops or holders attached to the sides of the Ark. These staves were used to carry the Ark whenever the Israelites needed to move the Tabernacle to a new location. The staves represent the means by which the Ark was to be carried, signifying the involvement of the people in the work of transporting God’s presence. This reminds us that God invites us to be active participants in His divine plan and to play a role in carrying His message to others.

Symbolism of Gold:The extensive use of gold in constructing the Ark and other elements of the Tabernacle emphasizes the preciousness and holiness of God’s presence and His Word. Gold is often associated with purity, royalty, and divinity, highlighting the sacred nature of the Ark and everything it represented.

The Ark as a Type of Christ:In the New Testament, the Ark of the Covenant is seen as a foreshadowing or type of Christ. Just as the Ark held the Law, the manna, and Aaron’s rod, Christ embodies the fulfillment of the Law, the Bread of Life, and the eternal High Priest. The Ark’s placement in the innermost part of the Tabernacle, the Holy of Holies, reflects Jesus’ role as the mediator between God and humanity.

God’s Presence with His People:Ultimately, the Ark served as a tangible reminder of God’s covenant and presence among the Israelites. It was a visual representation of the fact that God dwelt with His people and journeyed with them through the wilderness. In our lives, we can take comfort in the assurance that God is with us always, guiding, protecting, and providing for us.

In conclusion, Exodus 37:5 offers us valuable insights into the significance of the Ark of the Covenant and its role in the Tabernacle. As we reflect on this verse, we are reminded of God’s faithfulness, His desire for our obedience, and the invitation to actively participate in His divine plan. The Ark also points us to the ultimate fulfillment of God’s promises through Jesus Christ, who represents the true and eternal presence of God among His people.
