Exodus 37:26

Listen to this article

“And he overlaid it with pure gold, both the top of it, and the sides thereof round about, and the horns of it: also he made unto it a crown of gold round about.”

Context: Exodus is the second book of the Bible and primarily deals with the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, their journey through the wilderness, and the establishment of the covenant between God and His chosen people.

In chapter 37, we find a detailed description of the construction of the Ark of the Covenant. The Ark was a sacred and central item in Israelite worship, signifying God’s presence and the covenant between Him and the people of Israel.

The Ark of the Covenant: The verse describes the overlaying of the Ark with pure gold. The Ark was a wooden chest made of acacia wood, and it served as a container for the stone tablets upon which the Ten Commandments were written. The use of pure gold signifies the Ark’s holiness and the preciousness of God’s law.

Top, Sides, and Horns: The entire Ark, including the top (lid), sides, and horns (protrusions on each corner), were overlaid with pure gold. This symbolizes the complete and all-encompassing nature of God’s presence and the significance of His covenant with His people. It also points to the completeness of God’s sovereignty and authority.

The Crown of Gold: The verse mentions the addition of a crown of gold around the Ark. This crown could refer to a decorative molding or rim that encircled the top of the Ark. The crown emphasizes the majesty and kingship of God. It reminds the people that God is the King of Israel and that His law and covenant should be honored and revered.

The Holiness of God: The overlaying of the Ark with pure gold highlights the holiness of God and His Word. Gold is a symbol of purity and divinity. Just as the Ark was set apart as holy, God is set apart as holy and righteous. This teaches us to approach God with reverence and awe.

The Completeness of God’s Presence: The Ark being fully covered with gold reflects the completeness of God’s presence among His people. It teaches us that God is not only present in certain parts of our lives but is fully involved in every aspect. He desires to have a place in our hearts and minds, ruling over every area of our existence.

The Majesty of God’s Kingship: The crown of gold symbolizes God’s kingship and His rule over His people. It reminds us that God is the sovereign King, and we should acknowledge Him as such. It also teaches us that God’s authority should be paramount in our lives.

The Covenant and God’s Law: The Ark contained the stone tablets with the Ten Commandments, representing God’s covenant with the Israelites. It serves as a reminder that God establishes covenants with His people, and His laws are to be cherished and obeyed. As Christians, we can find spiritual principles in the Ten Commandments that guide us in righteous living and loving God and others.

Overall, Exodus 37:26 speaks of the significance and holiness of God’s presence and His Word. It reminds us to honor God’s authority in our lives and to cherish His covenant and commandments. As we study the Ark of the Covenant, we can draw parallels to the Christian faith, recognizing that God’s presence is with us, His Word is precious, and His reign as King is eternal.
