Exodus 38:9

Posted on 29 May 2025
Listen to this article

“And he made the court: on the south side southward the hangings of the court were of fine twined linen, a hundred cubits.”

Context:Exodus 38:9 is part of the detailed description of the construction of the tabernacle, which was a portable sanctuary built by the Israelites in the wilderness, following God’s instructions. The tabernacle was a central place of worship and symbolized God’s presence among His people during their journey from Egypt to the Promised Land.

Key Points:

  • Construction of the Court:The verse mentions the construction of the court, which was the outermost area of the tabernacle. This courtyard surrounded the main tabernacle structure, including the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place. The court was a sacred space where various rituals and ceremonies were conducted.

Hangings of the Court:The south side of the court was enclosed by “hangings,” which were made of fine twined linen. These hangings acted as a barrier, defining the sacred space and separating it from the rest of the camp. The use of fine twined linen indicates the attention to detail and craftsmanship involved in the construction of the tabernacle.

Spiritual Significance and Lessons:

  • Separation and Holiness:The construction of the court and its hangings emphasized the concept of separation and holiness. The courtyard represented a boundary between the holy presence of God and the ordinary surroundings. It served as a reminder that God is holy and that His people were called to be separate from sin and the world. As Christians, we are also called to live holy lives, set apart for God’s purposes (1 Peter 1:16).
  • Fine Linen – Purity and Righteousness:The use of fine twined linen symbolizes purity and righteousness. Fine linen was often associated with priests and their garments, reflecting their consecration to God’s service. In Revelation 19:8, the fine linen is equated with the righteous deeds of the saints. This indicates that God desires His people to lead righteous and blameless lives, dedicated to His service.
  • South Side – Seeking God’s Face:The south side of the tabernacle held special significance, as it was the direction in which people sought the face of God. “Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.” This verse reminds us of the importance of seeking God’s presence and dwelling in His house.

Application:As we reflect on Exodus 38:9, we are reminded of the call to live holy lives, separated from sin, and consecrated for God’s service. The construction of the tabernacle and its court also highlights the significance of seeking God’s presence and desiring to be in communion with Him. Just as the Israelites carefully crafted the tabernacle, we must also put effort into our relationship with God, seeking Him daily through prayer, reading His Word, and living in righteousness. Let this Bible study encourage you to examine your life and consider whether you are living a separated, holy life, and actively seeking God’s presence. Remember that God desires a close and intimate relationship with each one of us, and through Jesus Christ, we have access to the Father and can approach Him boldly (Hebrews 4:16).
