Exodus 38:21
This is the sum of the tabernacle, even of the tabernacle of testimony, as it was counted, according to the commandment of Moses, for the service of the Levites, by the hand of Ithamar, son to Aaron the priest.
Exodus 38:21 (KJV)
Context
The book of Exodus records Israel’s liberation from slavery in Egypt, their journey through the wilderness, and the establishment of the covenant with God at Mount Sinai. In this chapter, the narrative reaches the completion of the tabernacle, a portable sanctuary that served as the dwelling place of God’s presence among His people. This verse is an official summary or inventory statement, recording the accounting of the tabernacle’s construction and materials.
Meaning
The verse calls the tabernacle the “tabernacle of testimony.” It was a sacred tent where the Ark of the Covenant was kept, and it was called a testimony because it symbolized God’s presence and His covenant with Israel. The tabernacle was central to Israel’s worship and relationship with God.
The phrase “as it was counted” indicates a careful, official inventory. The following verses in Exodus 38:22-31 detail the specific amounts of gold, silver, and brass used, with the gold from offerings totaling twenty-nine talents and seven hundred thirty shekels, and the silver from the census totaling one hundred talents and one thousand seven hundred seventy-five shekels. This accounting highlights principles of accountability, order, and faithful stewardship in God’s service.
The construction was done “according to the commandment of Moses.” This emphasizes that the work was not a human initiative but a divine command. God gave Moses detailed instructions for building the tabernacle and its furnishings, as recorded in earlier chapters of Exodus. The people followed those instructions faithfully.
The service of the Levites is also central. The Levites were a tribe set apart for serving in the tabernacle and assisting the priests. They had responsibilities such as setting up and dismantling the tabernacle whenever the Israelites moved. Specific clans of Levites were assigned to carry and care for each part of the tabernacle.
Ithamar, son of Aaron the priest, supervised the work. As one of Aaron’s sons and a priestly descendant from the tribe of Levi, he had authority and responsibility in ensuring that everything was carried out according to God’s commands. His role connects to the broader priestly line and the orderly administration of worship.
Application
Obedience to God’s Commands: The tabernacle was built exactly as God commanded through Moses. As Christians, we are called to obey God’s commands, recognizing that His ways are higher and better than our own.
The Presence of God: The tabernacle was where God’s presence dwelled among Israel. Today, believers are temples of the Holy Spirit, and we should live in a way that honors God’s presence in our lives.
Service and Ministry: The Levites’ service reminds us that each believer is gifted and called to serve in God’s kingdom. We should use our gifts to advance God’s purposes and help others.
Reflection
Exodus 38:21 shows that God values order, accountability, and faithful stewardship in His work. The tabernacle was a place of testimony to God’s presence and covenant. As we consider this verse, we are reminded to live with integrity, serve willingly, and honor God’s presence in every area of life.
