Exodus 38:22

Posted on 1 June 2025
Listen to this article

“And Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, made all that the LORD commanded Moses.”

Context:The book of Exodus is the second book of the Bible and is part of the Pentateuch, also known as the Torah, which consists of the first five books of the Old Testament. The book of Exodus continues the narrative of the Israelites’ journey from slavery in Egypt to their liberation and the establishment of a covenant with God at Mount Sinai.

Exodus 38:22 falls within a larger section (Exodus 35-40) that describes the construction of the Tabernacle, a portable sanctuary where the Israelites would worship God during their travels in the wilderness. In this section, we find detailed instructions given by God to Moses on how to build the Tabernacle and all its components. The verse in question highlights the skilled craftsman, Bezaleel, who was chosen by God to oversee the construction of the Tabernacle according to the Lord’s commands.

Key Points:

  • Bezaleel:He was the son of Uri, who, in turn, was the son of Hur. Bezaleel was a member of the tribe of Judah. The Bible mentions him as a gifted craftsman with specific talents in various art forms, including goldsmithing, silversmithing, and other skilled works (Exodus 31:2-5). God appointed him to be in charge of creating the Tabernacle and its sacred furnishings.
  • Divine Appointment:It is crucial to recognize that Bezaleel’s craftsmanship was not merely a result of human talent; it was a divine appointment. God specifically chose Bezaleel and filled him with His Spirit to carry out the intricate and sacred task of building the Tabernacle (Exodus 31:3). This highlights the importance of recognizing and utilizing the gifts and talents that God has bestowed upon us for His glory.
  • Obedience:The verse emphasizes that Bezaleel made “all that the LORD commanded Moses.” This underscores the significance of obedience to God’s instructions. Bezaleel faithfully followed God’s design without deviation, ensuring that the Tabernacle was constructed according to God’s divine plan.

Lessons to Learn:

  • God Provides Gifts:Just as God appointed Bezaleel with unique talents and abilities for a specific purpose, He has also equipped each of us with individual gifts and skills. These gifts are meant to be used to serve God and others in meaningful ways.
  • Obedience and Faithfulness:Bezaleel’s obedience to God’s commands is an example for us to follow. When God instructs us in His Word, we should strive to be obedient and faithful, trusting that His ways are perfect and lead to blessings.
  • Serving God with Excellence:Bezaleel’s craftsmanship was characterized by excellence and attention to detail. This demonstrates the importance of offering our best to God in whatever task or service He calls us to undertake.
  • The Beauty of the Tabernacle:The construction of the Tabernacle and its furnishings reflects the value of creating a place of worship and fellowship with God. It reminds us of the importance of having sacred spaces and times dedicated to drawing near to God in worship and prayer.

In conclusion, Exodus 38:22 teaches us about the significance of using our God-given gifts for His glory, the importance of obedience to God’s commands, and the beauty of worshiping Him with excellence. Let us seek to serve God faithfully, following His guidance in all that we do, just as Bezaleel did when constructing the Tabernacle.
