Exodus 40:24

Posted on 25 April 2025
Listen to this article

“And he put the candlestick in the tent of the congregation, over against the table, on the side of the tabernacle southward.”

Context:Exodus 40 describes the final stage of the construction of the Tabernacle-a portable and sacred dwelling place for God among the Israelites during their wilderness journey. The Tabernacle was a central place of worship and symbolized God’s presence in their midst.

The Candlestick (or Lampstand):The verse mentions the placement of the candlestick inside the tent of the congregation (Tabernacle). This candlestick was one of the key furniture pieces of the Tabernacle. It was made of pure gold and had seven branches with lamps on each branch. It is also referred to as the “lampstand” or “menorah.”

Location:The candlestick was placed “over against the table, on the side of the tabernacle southward.” It was situated on the south side of the Tabernacle, opposite the table of showbread.

Significance of the Candlestick:The lampstand held a symbolic and practical significance. Symbolically, it represented light, knowledge, and wisdom. It is often associated with the presence of God, who is the source of all light (Psalm 27:1). The light from the lamps symbolized God’s guidance, enlightenment, and His illuminating presence among the Israelites.

The Table of Showbread:The table mentioned in the verse refers to the “Table of Showbread,” another significant piece of furniture inside the Tabernacle. The table was made of acacia wood and overlaid with gold. It held twelve loaves of bread, representing the twelve tribes of Israel, and symbolized God’s provision and sustenance.

The Southward Placement:The specific location of the candlestick to the south might carry some symbolic meaning. The south direction often signifies blessing and favour in the Bible (Psalm 126:4). Placing the lampstand on the south side may symbolize the favour of God shining upon His people and illuminating their path.

Application:As believers today, we can draw lessons from this verse. The placement of the candlestick reminds us of our responsibility to shine God’s light in the world (Matthew 5:14-16). We are called to be lights in a dark world, displaying the wisdom and knowledge found in Christ. The position of the candlestick opposite the table of showbread reminds us of the importance of God’s provision (both physically and spiritually) and our dependence on Him for sustenance.

Final Thoughts:Exodus 40:24 reminds us of the significance of God’s presence and His guidance in our lives. It symbolizes the importance of being lights in a dark world and the provision and sustenance that come from God. As we study and meditate on God’s Word, may we be encouraged to walk in His light and share it with others, knowing that He is the source of all wisdom and understanding.
