In 1 Samuel 29, the Philistines gather for battle against Israel. David and his men, who have been living with the Philistines, join the Philistine army led by King Achish. However, the other Philistine lords express concern about David’s loyalty, as they remember his past victories against them. They insist that David and his men be sent back to their town of Ziklag, fearing that they might turn against them during the battle. King Achish reluctantly agrees and praises David for his loyalty, despite the lords’ suspicions.
This chapter highlights the complex situation David finds himself in. While living among the Philistines, he is expected to fight against his own people, the Israelites. However, God’s providence prevents this from happening, as the other Philistine lords convince King Achish to send David away. Through this turn of events, God protects David from fighting against his own people, furthering His plan for David to become the king of Israel.
