Listen to this article

“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”

Context:Genesis 2:24 is part of the creation account in the book of Genesis. It follows the description of God creating Eve from Adam’s rib to be his suitable helper and companion.

Leaving and Cleaving:The verse begins with the statement that a man shall leave his father and mother. This emphasises the establishment of a new family unit separate from the parental home. Leaving signifies a shift in priority, responsibility, and loyalty as the man takes on the role of a husband.

The Union of Husband and Wife:The verse goes on to say that the man shall "cleave unto his wife." This phrase suggests a deep and intimate connection between husband and wife. The word "cleave" can also be understood as "hold fast," "adhere," or "be joined together." It implies a strong bond that involves loyalty, commitment, and unity.

Becoming One Flesh:The verse concludes by stating that the husband and wife shall become one flesh. This points to the physical, emotional, and spiritual unity between them. It signifies the intimate union and oneness that is established through the marriage covenant.

Reflections and Application:Genesis 2:24 provides several important insights for married couples and those considering marriage:

  • Leaving and Priorities:It highlights the significance of leaving one’s parents and establishing a new family unit. It implies that the husband and wife should prioritise their commitment to each other above other relationships.
  • Unity and Commitment:The verse emphasises the importance of unity and commitment within marriage. Husbands and wives are called to cleave to one another, showing loyalty, support, and devotion.
  • Oneness:The concept of becoming one flesh illustrates the deep intimacy that is possible within marriage. It implies a holistic unity that encompasses physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions.
  • Marriage as a Covenant:Genesis 2:24 highlights the sacred nature of marriage. It is not merely a contract but a covenant established by God, which calls for lifelong commitment and faithfulness.
  • God’s Design for Marriage:This verse reflects God’s original intent for marriage—an intimate partnership between a man and a woman, united in love, mutual support, and companionship.

Overall, Genesis 2:24 provides a foundational understanding of the marital relationship, emphasising the importance of leaving, cleaving, and becoming one flesh. It serves as a guiding principle for the union between husband and wife, calling for commitment, unity, and lifelong devotion.
