Genesis Chapter 4
Summery
Genesis 4 tells the story of Cain and Abel, the sons of Adam and Eve. In this chapter, Cain, the older brother, is a farmer who cultivates the land, while Abel is a shepherd who tends to sheep.
Both Cain and Abel offer sacrifices to God, but only Abel’s offering of the best of his flock pleases God. This angers Cain, and he becomes filled with jealousy and resentment towards his brother. God warns Cain about the consequences of his feelings, but Cain does not heed the warning.
Out of envy, Cain lures Abel to a field and kills him. God confronts Cain about the murder and curses him, making him a wanderer on the earth. Filled with remorse, Cain expresses fear of being killed by others. In response, God places a mark of protection on Cain, ensuring that anyone who harms him will suffer vengeance sevenfold.
Cain leaves God’s presence and settles in the land of Nod, where he builds a city and becomes the ancestor of a civilization. The chapter concludes with the birth of Adam and Eve’s third son, Seth, who is seen as a replacement for Abel.
