Genesis 31 recounts Jacob’s departure from Laban’s household after years of service. Jacob had grown wealthy through his successful breeding of Laban’s flocks, which caused tension between him and Laban’s sons. God instructed Jacob to return to his homeland, Canaan. Fearing Laban’s reaction, Jacob secretly gathered his wives, children, and livestock, and fled.
Laban pursued Jacob, but God warned him in a dream not to harm Jacob. When Laban caught up with Jacob, he accused him of stealing his household idols. Unaware that Rachel had taken them, Jacob proclaimed that whoever had taken the idols would be put to death. Rachel hid the idols and deceived her father by sitting on them, claiming to be in her menstrual period.
Jacob confronted Laban, recounting his many years of honest work. They made a covenant, setting up a pile of stones as a witness. They agreed not to harm each other and promised to uphold the covenant.
