Genesis 38 tells the intriguing story of Judah, one of Jacob’s sons. Judah marries a Canaanite woman named Shuah and they have three sons together: Er, Onan, and Shelah. Judah arranges for his eldest son, Er, to marry a woman named Tamar. However, Er was wicked in the sight of the Lord, so God took his life. Following the custom of levirate marriage, Judah tells his second son, Onan, to fulfill his duty by marrying Tamar and giving her offspring in his brother’s name. However, Onan selfishly practices contraception, displeasing God, and he also dies.
Tamar is left widowed and childless, and she waits for Judah’s youngest son, Shelah, to grow up and fulfill his duty. But Judah hesitates in giving Shelah to her in marriage, fearing that Shelah might also die. Tamar, desperate for a child, disguises herself as a prostitute and seduces Judah. She becomes pregnant by him and later reveals her identity to Judah when he discovers she is pregnant. Judah acknowledges his wrongdoing and declares Tamar more righteous than himself.
This chapter serves as a pivotal point in the narrative, showing the flawed character of Judah and his eventual transformation. It also highlights the significance of Tamar’s perseverance and her role in the lineage of Judah’s descendants.
