Genesis 6:22

Listen to this article

“Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.”

This verse concludes the account of Noah and the construction of the ark in the biblical narrative of the Flood. Let’s explore the context and significance of this verse in a Bible study.

Context:Genesis 6:22 is situated within the larger context of the account of Noah and the Flood, which begins in Genesis 6:9. In this passage, the Bible describes the wickedness and corruption that had become prevalent among humanity, leading to God’s decision to bring about a worldwide flood to cleanse the earth.

Noah, however, found favour in the eyes of the Lord. God chose Noah to build an ark as a means of preserving humanity and a representative selection of animal species. God gave Noah specific instructions regarding the construction of the ark, including its dimensions, the materials to be used, and the need to gather pairs of animals. Genesis 6:22 concludes this account by affirming Noah’s obedience in carrying out all that God had commanded him.

Significance and Lessons:

  • Obedience to God’s Commands:The verse highlights Noah’s obedience and faithfulness in following God’s instructions precisely. Noah’s unwavering obedience is a testament to his trust in God and his willingness to submit to divine authority. This serves as an example for believers today to be obedient to God’s commands and instructions in their lives, even when they may not fully understand the reasons behind them.
  • Faithfulness in the Face of Opposition:Noah’s obedience was not without challenges. Building an ark of such immense size would have required great dedication, time, and resources. Furthermore, Noah faced opposition and ridicule from others who likely did not understand or believe in God’s message of the impending flood. Despite these obstacles, Noah remained faithful and carried out his task diligently. This reminds believers that they may face opposition and scepticism when following God’s commands, but they are called to persevere in faithfulness.
  • God’s Faithfulness and Protection:The account of Noah’s obedience demonstrates God’s faithfulness to His promises. God provided specific instructions to Noah for the construction of the ark, and Noah followed them meticulously. As a result, God protected Noah and his family, preserving them from the destruction of the flood. This underscores God’s trustworthiness and His commitment to those who remain faithful to Him.
  • God’s Guidance and Instruction:The verse also highlights the importance of seeking and following God’s guidance and instruction in our lives. God provided Noah with clear directions on how to build the ark and gather the animals. Similarly, believers are encouraged to seek God’s guidance through prayer, studying His Word, and listening to the prompting of the Holy Spirit. Trusting in God’s guidance and following His instructions can lead to a life aligned with His purposes.

In summary, Genesis 6:22 emphasises Noah’s obedience in fulfilling all that God commanded him. This verse reminds us of the importance of obedience to God’s commands, faithfulness in the face of opposition, God’s faithfulness and protection, and the significance of seeking and following God’s guidance and instruction in our lives.
