Genesis 13:6

Posted on 15 July 2023
Listen to this article

“And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together.”

Context:In Genesis 13, we find Abram (later known as Abraham) and his nephew Lot facing a challenge. They had become very wealthy, possessing numerous flocks, herds, and tents. Due to their combined wealth, the land they occupied could no longer support both of them. This verse highlights the tension arising from their abundance and the need to find a solution.

The Challenge of Prosperity:One important lesson we can learn from this passage is the challenge that prosperity can bring. Both Abram and Lot had been blessed by God, resulting in significant wealth. However, this abundance led to a conflict as the land could no longer sustain them. It teaches us that even blessings can present challenges and require wise decision-making.

Conflict and its Resolution:The verse emphasises that the land was not able to bear Abram and Lot living together because their possessions were too great. The conflict over resources arose due to the size of their herds and flocks. This situation required a resolution to prevent ongoing strife between them.

Choosing Peace and Unity:Genesis 13:7-9 describes the subsequent decision made by Abram to resolve the conflict. He offers Lot the opportunity to choose any part of the land he desires, showing a spirit of generosity and peace. Abram prioritised maintaining family unity and avoiding conflict, even at the cost of potentially giving up what might have been considered the better land.

Trusting God’s Provision:Abram’s decision reflects his trust in God’s provision and blessings. He believed that God would continue to bless and provide for him, regardless of the land he occupied. This trust demonstrates Abram’s faith and his understanding that true prosperity comes from God rather than material possessions.

Application:As we reflect on this passage, we can draw several practical applications for our lives today. First, we should recognise that prosperity brings its own challenges, and we must navigate them wisely. Second, conflicts are inevitable, even among God’s people, but we should prioritise peace and unity above personal gain. Third, we must trust in God’s provision and blessings, knowing that true prosperity comes from Him and not solely from material wealth.

In summary, Genesis 13:6 presents the challenge faced by Abram and Lot due to their abundance, leading to the need for a resolution. This passage teaches us about the challenges of prosperity, the importance of peace and unity, and the need to trust in God’s provision.
