Genesis 13:9

Listen to this article

“Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.”

In this verse, we find Abram (later known as Abraham) and his nephew Lot, who had been traveling together, facing a potential conflict due to the increasing size of their flocks and herds. The land could no longer sustain both of them, causing disputes between their respective herdsmen.

Context:Prior to this event, Abram and Lot had left Egypt, where Abram had acquired significant wealth through Pharaoh’s blessings. They returned to the land of Canaan, the place God had promised to give to Abram’s descendants.

Abram’s Offer:Recognizing the need for resolution, Abram proposes a solution to avoid conflict between their households. He suggests that they separate and choose different portions of the land for their flocks. In doing so, Abram demonstrates his desire for peace and harmony, seeking to maintain a good relationship with Lot.

Generosity and Selflessness:Abram’s offer reveals his generous and selfless nature. He allows Lot to choose first, giving him the freedom to select whichever portion of land he desires. Despite being the elder and the one through which God’s covenant promises would be fulfilled, Abram does not assert his authority or demand preference. Instead, he allows Lot to make the decision.

Trusting in God:Abram’s actions also demonstrate his trust in God’s provision and faithfulness. By leaving the choice to Lot, Abram relies on God to guide him to the portion of land that He intends for him. Abram’s confidence in God’s sovereignty and His ability to fulfill His promises shows his deep faith.
