Genesis 15:21
And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.
Genesis 15:21 (KJV)
Context
This verse completes the list of ten nations whose land God promised to Abraham. The covenant in Genesis 15 was made when Abraham was childless and owned no land. Yet God named the peoples who then occupied the territory, showing that the promise was real and tied to actual history. These groups were entrenched inhabitants of Canaan, not distant or imaginary foes.
Meaning
The four groups named here each held important parts of the promised land. The Amorites were a strong highland people, often representing the whole population of Canaan. The Canaanites lived in the fertile lowlands and along trade routes. The Girgashites were an ancient tribe, and the Jebusites held the mountain city later called Jerusalem. By listing these specific peoples, God made clear that the land was inhabited and would not be gained without struggle. The promise was not abstract; it concerned a concrete, occupied territory.
Biblical connections
The Jebusites kept control of Jerusalem until David captured it (2 Samuel 5:6-9). This shows that the promise given to Abraham took centuries to unfold. The Amorites are also mentioned in Genesis 15:16, where God says their sin had not yet reached its full measure. That verse explains why the land was not given immediately: God was waiting with patience. The listing of these nations underscores that fulfillment would involve real obstacles and divine judgment.
Application
God’s promises often come with real obstacles. Abraham could not see how his descendants would defeat such powerful nations. Believers today may face difficulties that seem too great. This verse teaches that God’s word is certain, but His people must trust and obey while they wait. The journey to blessing includes both faith and action. The covenant promise was certain, but its realization required perseverance and divine assistance.
Reflection
The list of nations reminds us that God rules over all peoples and borders. No earthly power can block His purposes. When circumstances look impossible, we can rely on His unchanging character. The same God who gave the land to Abraham’s descendants will fulfill every promise He has made to those who walk with Him in faith.
