Genesis 18:10
And he said, I will certainly returne vnto thee according to the time of life; and loe, Sarah thy wife shall haue a sonne. And Sarah heard it in the tent doore, which was behind him. Genesis 18:10 (KJV)
In this passage we see Abraham entertaining three visitors near the oaks of Mamre. Abraham’s hospitality is evident as he provides food and rest for the strangers. During the visit the visitors disclose a remarkable promise: despite their great age, Sarah will bear a son. The focus of the verse is the dialogue in which one of the visitors tells Abraham, “I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life,” indicating that the promise will be fulfilled at the proper appointed time for conception and childbirth.
Both Abraham and Sarah were advanced in years, and Sarah had been barren all her life. The news of a future son was astonishing and seemed impossible to human eyes. Sarah, who overheard the conversation from the tent door, responded with disbelief. The following verses (Genesis 18:11‑12) record her laughter, revealing her doubt about bearing a child in old age.
The visitors were not ordinary men; they were messengers from God, one of whom represented the LORD Himself. In Genesis 18:13‑14 the LORD questions Sarah’s laughter, re‑affirms the promise, and declares that nothing is too hard for Him. This emphasizes God’s unlimited power to bring about miracles and His faithfulness to His word.
The narrative of Genesis 18:10‑14 demonstrates that God keeps His promises even when circumstances appear impossible. The promised son, Isaac, later becomes a pivotal figure in God’s redemptive plan. The passage therefore highlights the importance of trusting in God’s promises, recognizing that He fulfills His word in perfect timing according to His divine plan, regardless of human obstacles.
