Listen to this article

“And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.”

Genesis 19 tells the story of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and the rescue of Lot and his family. This particular verse focuses on an incident involving Lot’s daughters after they had fled from the city and sought refuge in a cave in the mountains.

To understand the context of this verse, it’s essential to examine the events leading up to it. In Genesis 19:30-33, we learn that Lot and his two daughters had settled in a cave. They believed that they were the only survivors of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. The daughters, out of concern for their father’s lineage and the continuation of their family, devised a plan to ensure they could bear children.

Genesis 19:34: the firstborn daughter says to the younger daughter, “Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.” Their plan was to get their father drunk and have sexual relations with him so that they could conceive and carry on the family line.

Upon first reading, this verse can be perplexing and troubling, as it describes incestuous behavior. It is crucial to note that the Bible does not endorse or condone such actions. Rather, it records events as they happened, revealing the flawed nature of humanity.

The story of Lot and his daughters is a narrative that highlights the moral degradation of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, as well as the consequences of living in a society steeped in wickedness. The passage serves as a reminder of the gravity of sin and the depths to which people can sink when they turn away from God’s ways. It demonstrates the devastating effects of living in a culture corrupted by immorality and the need for redemption and righteousness.

It is important to approach this verse with caution and recognize that it depicts an unfortunate incident in human history. Christians should not interpret it as an endorsement or approval of incestuous relationships. Instead, it is a reminder of the brokenness and fallenness of humanity and the need for God’s grace and transformation in our lives.

As we continue to study the Bible, it is crucial to consider the broader teachings and principles found within its pages. The Bible provides guidance, wisdom, and moral instruction, and it is essential to interpret specific verses within the context of the overall message of Scripture.
