Genesis 19:35

Listen to this article

“And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.”

This verse is part of the account of Lot and his daughters after they fled from the city of Sodom, which was about to be destroyed by God because of its wickedness. Lot’s wife:had turned into a pillar of salt as a result of looking back at the city against God’s command.

After leaving the city, Lot and his daughters took refuge in a cave in the mountains. Feeling that they were the only survivors and fearing that they would not have descendants, the daughters:devised a plan to have children by their father. They got their father drunk with wine on two consecutive nights and had sexual relations with him, resulting in both daughters becoming pregnant.

This particular verse:describes the firstborn daughter’s actions. It mentions that they made their father drink wine and that she went in and lay with him. It also notes that Lot was unaware:of what had transpired, indicating that he was too intoxicated to realize what was happening.

It is important to note that the Bible:does not endorse or approve of the actions taken by Lot’s daughters. In fact, their behavior is condemned as sinful and incestuous. The story serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of sin and the depths to which human depravity can sink.

While this account:raises challenging moral questions, it is essential to interpret it within the broader context of the Bible. The Bible:records both the triumphs and failures of its characters, and it does not shy away from depicting the consequences of their actions. It emphasizes the need for repentance and the importance of following God’s commands.

Ultimately, this episode in Genesis:highlights the fallen nature of humanity and serves as a reminder of our need for God’s grace and redemption. It demonstrates the consequences of straying from God’s plan:and serves as a cautionary tale against succumbing to sin and its destructive effects.
