Genesis 20:14

And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and womenservants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife.

Genesis 20:14 (KJV)

Abraham and Sarah were staying in Gerar, where Abraham told King Abimelech that Sarah was his sister. He feared the king would kill him to take Sarah. So Abimelech took Sarah into his household, but God warned him in a dream and told him to return her. God also revealed that Abraham was a prophet and that his prayer would bring healing.

In this verse, Abimelech gives Abraham sheep, oxen, menservants, and womenservants, and he restores Sarah to him. These gifts are substantial, showing that Abimelech wanted to make amends publicly. He acknowledged his wrong and sought to repair the relationship, even though he had acted in ignorance. The specific list of gifts shows the completeness of the restitution and the value placed on restoring the relationship.

God had revealed to Abimelech that Abraham was a prophet, and Abraham’s prayer would bring healing to his household. This explains why Abimelech gave such generous gifts: he wanted Abraham’s intercession. The restoration of Sarah to Abraham is central, as God had promised Abraham that Sarah would bear a son. This event prepares for the healing of Abimelech’s household through Abraham’s prayer in the following verses.

This account teaches the importance of honesty. Abraham’s deception caused trouble for others, but God still protected him and Sarah. When we make mistakes, we should follow Abimelech’s example: take responsibility, make restitution, and seek reconciliation. Genuine repentance includes concrete actions to repair harm. Restitution is not just about words; it involves real steps to make things right.

God holds even powerful kings accountable for how they treat His people. He intervened to protect Sarah, showing His faithfulness despite human failure. This verse reminds us that God can turn our errors into opportunities for grace and restoration. He is faithful even when we are not.
