Deuteronomy 1:20

Posted on 9 March 2024
Listen to this article

"And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the Amorites, which the Lord our God doth give unto us."

Context:The book of Deuteronomy is a record of Moses’ final speeches to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land. In this verse, Moses reminds the Israelites about their arrival at the mountain of the Amorites.

Historical Background:The Amorites were one of the prominent Canaanite nations inhabiting the land that God had promised to give to the Israelites. At this point, the Israelites had completed their forty years of wandering in the wilderness and were on the verge of entering the land of Canaan.

God’s Promise:Moses emphasises that the Lord their God had given them the mountain of the Amorites. This statement reminds the Israelites of God’s faithfulness and the fulfilment of His promise to give them the land He had sworn to their ancestors (Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob).

Spiritual Lessons:

  • God’s faithfulness:The verse highlights God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. Despite the challenges the Israelites faced, God remained true to His word. This serves as a reminder to us that God is faithful, and He will always fulfil His promises in His perfect timing.
  • Divine Provision:The mention of God giving the mountain of the Amorites to the Israelites reminds us that God is the ultimate provider. He is the one who grants us victory and blesses us with the resources we need to fulfil His purposes.
  • God’s Sovereignty:By acknowledging that the land is given by God, Moses affirms God’s sovereignty over the Israelites’ possession of the Promised Land. This reminds us that God is in control of all things and that He has the power to grant us victory over any obstacles we may face.
  • Trust and Obedience:This verse serves as a reminder to trust in God’s promises and to obey His commands. The Israelites had to trust in God’s provision and follow His guidance as they faced the challenges of entering and possessing the Promised Land. Likewise, we are called to trust in God’s promises and obey His word in our own lives.

Application:As we reflect on Deuteronomy 1:20, we are encouraged to trust in God’s faithfulness, rely on His provision, submit to His sovereignty, and faithfully obey His commands. Just as the Israelites were called to possess the land of Canaan, we are called to live victoriously in the promises and purposes that God has for us.

Remember to read and study the surrounding verses and chapters to gain a deeper understanding of the context and significance of Deuteronomy 1:20.
