Deuteronomy 1:21

Posted on 12 March 2024
Listen to this article

“Behold, the LORD thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged.”

Context:The book of Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible and serves as Moses’ final words to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. In this verse, Moses addresses the Israelites, reminding them of God’s promise to give them the land and encouraging them to possess it without fear or discouragement.

The Promised Land:God had promised the land of Canaan to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (the Israelites). The Israelites had been wandering in the wilderness for forty years as a consequence of their disobedience and lack of faith. Now, they were on the brink of entering the land that God had prepared for them.

God’s Faithfulness:Moses highlights that it is the LORD God who has set the land before them. This emphasizes the faithfulness and sovereignty of God in fulfilling His promises. Despite the challenges and obstacles they may face, the Israelites can trust in the reliability of God’s word.

Obedience and Courage:Moses instructs the Israelites to “go up and possess” the land. This implies that they needed to take action and actively participate in claiming the land. God’s promise did not negate their responsibility to obey and take steps of faith. They were to exercise courage and overcome their fear and discouragement.

Fear Not, Neither Be Discouraged:Moses encourages the Israelites to overcome their fear and discouragement. The task before them was daunting, with fortified cities and formidable enemies, but they were not to be paralyzed by fear. Instead, they were to trust in God’s presence and power, knowing that He would be with them as they stepped forward in faith.

Application:Deuteronomy 1:21 speaks to us today as a reminder of God’s faithfulness and the need for obedience and courage in our own lives. Like the Israelites, we may face challenges, obstacles, and uncertainties. However, we can draw strength from the knowledge that God is faithful to His promises and that He goes before us. We are called to trust in Him, step out in faith, and not be overcome by fear or discouragement.

In summary, Deuteronomy 1:21 exhorts the Israelites to possess the Promised Land without fear or discouragement, reminding them of God’s faithfulness and their responsibility to obey and be courageous. This verse encourages us to trust in God, step out in faith, and not allow fear or discouragement to hinder us from fulfilling His purposes in our lives.
