Deuteronomy 1:38

Listen to this article

"But Joshua the son of Nun, which standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: encourage him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it."

Context:The book of Deuteronomy is part of the Pentateuch, also known as the Torah or the Law of Moses. It is the fifth book of the Old Testament and contains the final speeches and instructions of Moses to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. Deuteronomy 1 recounts the journey of the Israelites in the wilderness and their refusal to enter the land due to fear.

Leadership Transition:In Deuteronomy 1:38, Moses is addressing the Israelites and speaking to them about their future after his own death. God had told Moses that he would not be allowed to enter the Promised Land due to his disobedience at Meribah (Numbers 20:12). Here, Moses announces that Joshua, the son of Nun, will be the one to lead the Israelites into the land.

Joshua’s Role:Moses acknowledges Joshua as his successor and emphasizes that Joshua is the chosen leader who will bring the people of Israel into the Promised Land. The phrase "which standeth before thee" implies that Joshua was already a prominent figure in the community, known for his faithfulness and dedication to serving Moses and God.

Encouragement:Moses instructs the Israelites to encourage Joshua. This command is significant because Moses knew that Joshua would face challenges and obstacles as he led the people. Encouragement plays a vital role in strengthening leaders and helping them fulfill their calling effectively.

Joshua’s Task:The verse states, "for he shall cause Israel to inherit it." Joshua’s primary responsibility was to lead the Israelites in conquering the land and distributing it among the tribes of Israel. The "it" refers to the Promised Land, which was a land flowing with milk and honey-a place of abundance and blessing that God had promised to give to the descendants of Abraham.

Application:Deuteronomy 1:38 teaches us several lessons. First, it highlights the importance of leadership succession and the role of leaders in God’s plans. God raises up leaders at different times and for specific purposes. Second, it reminds us of the significance of encouragement and support in the life of a leader. As followers of Christ, we should be intentional about encouraging and uplifting those in leadership positions. Finally, the verse encourages us to trust in God’s faithfulness to fulfill His promises. Just as God was faithful to bring the Israelites into the Promised Land through Joshua, He remains faithful to His promises today.

Remember to read the surrounding verses and chapters for a more comprehensive understanding of the context and message conveyed in Deuteronomy 1.
