Deuteronomy 10:11

Posted on 3 July 2024
Listen to this article

“And the LORD said unto me, Arise, take thy journey before the people, that they may go in and possess the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give unto them.”

Historical Context:Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Old Testament and is part of the Torah, which contains the laws and teachings given by God to the Israelites through Moses. The book of Deuteronomy serves as a reminder and renewal of the covenant between God and His chosen people before they enter the Promised Land.

God’s Command:In this verse, God instructs Moses to rise and lead the Israelites on their journey to possess the land that He had promised to their forefathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The journey referred to here is the conquest of the land of Canaan, which was their inheritance as descendants of Abraham.

God’s Promise:The Lord reiterates His faithfulness to fulfil the promise made to the forefathers. God had sworn an oath to give the land of Canaan to the Israelites as an everlasting possession (Genesis 17:8). The fulfilment of this promise is about to come to pass as the Israelites prepare to enter and possess the land.

God’s Sovereignty:The verse highlights God’s authority and sovereignty over the people. It is He who instructs Moses to lead the way before the people, emphasizing that their possession of the land is not dependent on their own strength or abilities but on the divine guidance and provision of God.

Obedience and Trust:The Israelites’ successful possession of the Promised Land hinged on their obedience and trust in God. Throughout the book of Deuteronomy, Moses reminds the people of the importance of following God’s commandments, walking in His ways, and placing their trust in Him alone. Their obedience and faithfulness were vital for the realisation of God’s promise.

Spiritual Application:Deuteronomy 10:11 serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. It encourages believers to trust in God’s sovereignty and guidance in their own lives. Just as the Israelites were called to possess the physical land of Canaan, Christians are called to “possess” the promises of God’s kingdom, which include salvation, peace, joy, and eternal life. This verse reminds us that God’s promises are sure and that He will lead and empower us to walk in obedience and faith as we journey through life.
