Listen to this article

“For the Lord your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward.”

This verse is part of Moses’ discourse to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land. It emphasises the greatness and sovereignty of God. Let’s break down the verse and explore its significance:

“For the Lord your God is God of gods”: This phrase highlights the supremacy of the Lord over all other gods. It affirms that there is no other deity or power that can compare to the God of Israel. This declaration reinforces the belief in monotheism, affirming that the Lord is the one true God.

“and Lord of lords”: This phrase further emphasises God’s supremacy and authority. It signifies that God has ultimate dominion and rulership over all earthly and heavenly lords or authorities. It acknowledges that God’s sovereignty extends over every aspect of creation, including the rulers and authorities of the world.

“a great God, a mighty, and a terrible”: These descriptions emphasise the awe-inspiring nature of God. God is great in power, exhibiting strength and might beyond human comprehension. The term “terrible” doesn’t imply a negative connotation but rather signifies the divine awesomeness and reverence due to God.

“which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward”: This phrase highlights God’s impartiality and justice. It signifies that God does not show favouritism or partiality based on external factors such as social status, wealth, or appearance. God judges people based on their hearts, their faithfulness, and their obedience to His commands rather than external factors. Likewise, God cannot be bribed or swayed by earthly rewards or offerings.

In summary, Deuteronomy 10:17 is a powerful affirmation of the uniqueness and supremacy of God. It reminds us that the Lord is above all other gods and lords, possessing immeasurable power and awe-inspiring qualities. It also assures us of God’s justice and impartiality, showing that He judges based on righteousness rather than outward appearances or bribes. This verse encourages believers to worship and serve God with reverence and to recognise His ultimate authority in their lives.
