Deuteronomy 12:1

Posted on 4 July 2024
Listen to this article

“These are the statutes and judgments, which ye shall observe to do in the land, which the LORD God of thy fathers giveth thee to possess it, all the days that ye live upon the earth.”

Context:The book of Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible and serves as Moses’ final exhortation to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. In this verse, Moses is instructing the people of Israel about the statutes and judgments they are to observe once they possess the land.

Observing the statutes and judgments:The verse emphasises the importance of obeying the commandments and laws given by God. The Israelites were to diligently follow these statutes and judgments throughout their lives, both individually and as a community.

God’s covenant with the Israelites:The reference to “the LORD God of thy fathers” highlights the covenant relationship between God and the Israelites. God had promised their forefathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, that He would give them the land of Canaan as their inheritance (Genesis 12:7; 13:14-17; 17:8). Now, as the Israelites prepare to possess the land, Moses reminds them of their responsibility to keep the statutes and judgments as an expression of their faithfulness and commitment to the covenant.

The land as a gift from God:Moses emphasises that the land they are about to possess is a gift from God. The phrase “which the LORD God of thy fathers giveth thee to possess it” emphasises God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promise. The Israelites were not to take their possession of the land lightly but to recognise it as a gracious gift from their covenant-keeping God.

Obedience as a lifelong commitment:The instruction to observe the statutes and judgments “all the days that ye live upon the earth” conveys the enduring nature of their commitment. God’s commandments were not just for a particular time or circumstance but were to be followed faithfully throughout their lives. It reflects the ongoing relationship between God and His people, emphasising the need for continual obedience and devotion.

Application for believers today:While this verse specifically addresses the Israelites in their historical context, it carries broader principles that can apply to believers today. As followers of God, we are called to obey His commandments and live according to His statutes and judgments. God’s Word provides guidance for our lives, and our obedience to His teachings reflects our love for Him (John 14:15). Just as the Israelites were called to faithfully observe the statutes and judgments, we too should seek to live in obedience to God’s Word throughout our lives.

Remember to study the entire book of Deuteronomy and consider the broader context to gain a comprehensive understanding of the message and themes contained within it.
