Deuteronomy 12:32

Listen to this article

“What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.”

This verse is part of Moses’ instructions to the Israelites regarding their worship and obedience to God. It emphasises the importance of faithfully following God’s commands without adding to or taking away from them.

Here are some key points and insights that can be drawn from this verse:

  • Obedience to God’s commands:The verse begins with the instruction to observe and do whatever God commands. The Israelites were to pay careful attention to God’s instructions and carry them out faithfully. This emphasises the significance of obedience in the life of a believer.
  • Avoiding additions:The second part of the verse warns against adding to God’s commands. It implies that God’s instructions are complete and sufficient, and no human additions are necessary. This principle is reiterated in other parts of the Bible, such as Proverbs 30:6 and Revelation 22:18-19, which caution against adding to or tampering with God’s Word.
  • Avoiding diminishments:The verse also prohibits diminishing or subtracting from God’s commands. This implies that God’s Word is to be honoured and preserved in its entirety. It discourages any attempt to dilute or undermine the authority and relevance of God’s instructions.
  • The importance of Scripture:Deuteronomy 12:32 highlights the significance of God’s Word. It emphasises that God’s commands are not to be taken lightly or altered according to human preferences. The verse reminds believers of the enduring nature of God’s Word and its authority in guiding their lives.
  • Application to the broader context:While this verse specifically addresses the Israelites, its principles can be applied more broadly to believers today. It encourages us to approach the Scriptures with reverence, recognising their divine origin and timeless relevance. It cautions against distorting or disregarding God’s Word and highlights the importance of obedience and adherence to His commands.

In summary, Deuteronomy 12:32 serves as a reminder to faithfully obey God’s commands without adding to or diminishing from them. It underscores the significance of Scripture, the need for obedience, and the importance of preserving the integrity of God’s Word. By studying and applying these principles, believers can deepen their relationship with God and live in alignment with His will.
