Deuteronomy 13:14

Posted on 4 July 2024
Listen to this article

“Then shalt thou inquire, and make search, and ask diligently; and, behold, if it be truth, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought among you.”

Context:Deuteronomy is part of the Torah, which consists of the first five books of the Bible, also known as the Pentateuch. It was written by Moses and contains the laws and teachings given by God to the Israelites. Deuteronomy specifically addresses the Israelites just before they enter the Promised Land.

Warning against False Prophets:Deuteronomy 13 begins by warning the Israelites about false prophets or dreamers who may arise among them, attempting to lead them astray from worshipping the true God. This verse emphasises the importance of investigating the claims made by such individuals.

Inquiring, Searching, and Asking Diligently:When faced with a situation where someone is promoting idolatry or leading people away from God, the verse encourages the Israelites to conduct a thorough investigation. It urges them to inquire, make a careful search, and ask diligently to determine the truth of the matter.

The Importance of Truth:The verse emphasises that the Israelites should seek the truth and ensure that the information they receive is certain. It underscores the seriousness of the offence of idolatry and the need to address it promptly and decisively.

Discernment and Testing:This verse teaches the importance of discernment and testing when confronted with claims or teachings that challenge one’s faith. The Israelites were called to exercise discernment by investigating the claims and actions of those promoting idolatry and to test them against the truth of God’s Word.

Application:Although this verse specifically addresses the Israelites’ context, its principles can be applied today. Christians are encouraged to exercise discernment and test the teachings they encounter, ensuring they align with the truth of Scripture. False teachings and ideologies can easily lead people astray, so it is crucial to search for truth diligently and compare it with God’s Word. Overall, Deuteronomy 13:14 serves as a reminder for believers to be discerning and to investigate diligently when faced with teachings or claims that could potentially lead them away from the worship of the one true God.
