Deuteronomy 17:17

Listen to this article

“Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.”

Context:Deuteronomy is part of the Torah, specifically the fifth book of the Bible, attributed to Moses. It contains a recapitulation of the laws and commands given to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land.

Prohibition against multiplying wives:In this verse, God gives a specific command to future kings of Israel. They are instructed not to multiply wives to themselves. This command emphasises the importance of monogamy and warns against engaging in polygamy.

Spiritual significance of monogamy:The primary reason for this prohibition is to prevent the heart of the king from turning away from the Lord. Polygamy could lead to potential distractions, divided loyalty, and the adoption of foreign religious practices through the influence of multiple wives. By emphasising monogamy, God seeks to safeguard the spiritual integrity and focus of the king.

God’s intention for marriage:This verse highlights God’s original design and intention for marriage, which is the lifelong union between one man and one woman. It underscores the importance of unity, faithfulness, and undivided devotion within the marital relationship.

Warning against excessive wealth:The second part of the verse advises against the accumulation of great wealth in the form of silver and gold. This warning serves as a reminder that earthly possessions should not become the primary focus or source of security for a king. The emphasis is on avoiding the temptation to trust in material wealth rather than relying on God’s provision and guidance.

Application for believers today:While this command was specifically given to the kings of Israel, there are several principles that can be applied to believers today. It encourages monogamy and faithfulness within marriage, emphasising the importance of undivided devotion to one’s spouse. It also cautions against the pursuit of excessive wealth and the potential dangers of materialism, reminding believers to prioritise their relationship with God above worldly possessions.

In summary, Deuteronomy 17:17 provides guidance to the kings of Israel regarding the prohibition of multiplying wives and accumulating excessive wealth. It underscores the importance of monogamy, undivided devotion to God, and a proper perspective on material possessions. As believers, we can apply these principles to our own lives, seeking to honour God in our relationships and priorities.
