Deuteronomy 17:19

Posted on 27 July 2024
Listen to this article

“And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them.”

Context:Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible and is part of the Torah, which contains the laws and instructions given by God to the Israelites. In this verse, Moses is speaking to the people of Israel and providing instructions regarding the future king of Israel.

Reading and Studying God’s Word:The verse emphasises the importance of the king having a personal copy of the law, which he is to read every day of his life. This highlights the significance of reading and studying God’s Word regularly. It implies that a leader should be intimately acquainted with God’s laws, as they serve as a guide for their leadership and decision-making.

Fear of the LORD:The purpose of the king reading the law daily is to “learn to fear the LORD his God.” This fear does not imply being afraid of God, but rather having a reverential awe and deep respect for Him. It involves recognising God’s authority and submitting to His will. The fear of the LORD is a theme emphasised throughout the Bible and is considered a crucial aspect of one’s relationship with God.

Obedience and Observance:The verse further states that the king should read the law to learn “to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them.” This highlights the importance of obedience and observance of God’s commandments. The king, as a leader, is expected to be an example to the people by following and upholding God’s laws. Obedience to God’s Word leads to a life that is pleasing to Him and brings blessings to individuals and communities.

Application to Our Lives:Though this verse specifically addresses the role of a king, its principles are applicable to all believers. Regular reading and study of the Scriptures are essential for every follower of God. It helps us grow in our understanding of His will, strengthens our relationship with Him, and equips us to live in obedience to His commandments. Developing a reverential fear of the LORD and living according to His Word should be the desire of every believer.

In summary, Deuteronomy 17:19 emphasises the importance of regularly reading and studying God’s Word, the fear of the LORD, and obedience to His commandments. It provides guidance not only for the role of a king but also for all believers in their relationship with God.
