Deuteronomy 19:9

Listen to this article

“And if thou shalt keep all these commandments to do them, which I command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, beside these three.”

Deuteronomy 19:9 is a verse found in the book of Deuteronomy, which is the fifth book of the Old Testament in the Bible. It is part of Moses’ farewell address to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land.

This particular verse focuses on the concept of obedience and the promise of additional cities of refuge. In the previous verses, God commanded the Israelites to set up cities of refuge, which were designated places where someone who had unintentionally caused the death of another person could flee and be protected from the avenger of blood (a family member seeking retribution). The three cities initially mentioned were to be set up on the east side of the Jordan River.

Deuteronomy 19:9:God emphasizes the importance of obedience to His commandments. If the Israelites wholeheartedly obeyed God’s commands, loving Him and walking in His ways, He promised to add three more cities of refuge to the three already designated. This would provide greater accessibility and protection for those who needed it.

This verse carries broader implications beyond the establishment of cities of refuge. It underscores the significance of obedience to God’s commandments, love for God, and walking in His ways. Obedience to God’s instructions was crucial for the Israelites’ relationship with Him and for their overall well-being as a community.

Today, this verse can serve as a reminder to believers of the importance of obedience to God’s commands and the blessings that result from such obedience. It encourages us to love and honour God by following His ways, and in doing so, we can experience His provision, protection, and blessings in our lives.

In summary, Deuteronomy 19:9 highlights the correlation between obedience to God’s commands and the promise of additional cities of refuge for the Israelites. It emphasises the importance of wholehearted love for God and walking in His ways. For believers today, it serves as a reminder of the significance of obedience and the blessings that flow from a faithful relationship with God.
