Deuteronomy 2:15

Listen to this article

“For indeed the hand of the LORD was against them, to destroy them from among the host, until they were consumed.”

Historical Context:The book of Deuteronomy is part of the Torah, the first five books of the Bible, and it was written by Moses to the Israelites as they were about to enter the Promised Land. Deuteronomy means “second law,” and it contains Moses’ recapitulation of the law and instructions for the Israelites before they crossed the Jordan River.

Journey through the Wilderness:In Deuteronomy 2, Moses recounts the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness after their liberation from Egypt. They had spent 40 years wandering in the desert due to their disobedience and lack of faith in God. During this time, they faced various challenges and encounters with other nations.

The Context of Verse 15:In this verse, Moses is referring to the Amorites, who were one of the nations the Israelites encountered during their journey. The Amorites were a powerful and warlike people, and their land was part of the territory God promised to give to the Israelites. However, the Amorites refused to allow the Israelites to pass through their land peacefully, and they even engaged them in battle.

God’s Hand against the Amorites:The verse highlights that the hand of the Lord was against the Amorites, indicating that God actively fought against them. The purpose was to destroy them from among the host, or the nations, until they were completely consumed. God’s intention was to give the land of the Amorites to the Israelites as part of His plan to fulfill His covenant promises to Abraham and his descendants.

Lessons and Applications:

  • God’s Sovereignty:The verse reminds us of God’s sovereignty and His power over nations and individuals. He has the authority to raise up or bring down any nation according to His divine purposes.
  • Faithfulness and Judgment:The destruction of the Amorites serves as a reminder that God is faithful to His promises. However, it also shows His judgment upon those who oppose His plans and refuse to acknowledge His authority.
  • Consequences of Disobedience:The Israelites’ journey in the wilderness, including the battles they faced, was a result of their disobedience and lack of faith. It serves as a lesson for us today to trust in God’s leading and follow His commandments to avoid unnecessary hardships.
  • God’s Provision:Despite the challenges, God remained with the Israelites and protected them on their journey. He showed His faithfulness by giving them victory over their enemies and leading them to the Promised Land. This demonstrates God’s provision and care for His people even in difficult times.

In summary, Deuteronomy 2:15 reflects God’s active involvement in the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness and His judgment upon the Amorites. It reminds us of God’s sovereignty, faithfulness, the consequences of disobedience, and His provision for His people.
