Deuteronomy 2:17

Listen to this article

“That the LORD spake unto me, saying.”

Context:The book of Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible and is part of the Pentateuch, which is also known as the Torah or the Law. It contains the final speeches of Moses to the Israelites, delivered just before they entered the Promised Land. The verse in question is a continuation of Moses’ narration of the events that occurred during the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness.

God’s Communication:The verse begins with the phrase “That the LORD spake unto me, saying.” This highlights the ongoing dialogue between God and Moses, as God communicated His instructions and guidance to Moses. It emphasises the importance of divine revelation and how God actively engaged with His chosen people.

Significance:The verse serves as a reminder of God’s involvement in the lives of the Israelites. Throughout their journey, God consistently communicated with Moses, giving him directions and clarifications for leading the people. It demonstrates God’s faithfulness in guiding and instructing His chosen nation.

Application:The verse prompts us to reflect on our own relationship with God. Just as God communicated with Moses, He desires to communicate with us through prayer, His Word (the Bible), and the Holy Spirit. We should seek to develop a close relationship with God, listening attentively to His voice and following His guidance. It reminds us of the importance of regularly spending time with God in prayer and studying His Word to understand His will for our lives.

Trusting God’s Guidance:As we observe how God guided the Israelites through the wilderness, we can learn to trust in His guidance and provision for our own journeys. Even when we face uncertain situations or challenging circumstances, we can be assured that God is with us, ready to speak to us and direct our steps. Like Moses, we should be open and receptive to God’s instructions and rely on His wisdom and leading.

Obedience:Throughout the book of Deuteronomy, Moses emphasises the importance of obedience to God’s commands. As we study this verse, we are reminded of the necessity of obeying God’s instructions and not deviating from His guidance. Obedience to God’s Word brings blessings and aligns us with His purposes.

In conclusion, Deuteronomy 2:17 highlights the ongoing communication between God and Moses during the Israelites’ wilderness journey. It emphasises God’s faithfulness, encourages us to seek a close relationship with God, and reminds us to trust and obey His guidance in our lives.
