Deuteronomy 22:26

Listen to this article

“But unto the damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the damsel no sin worthy of death: for as when a man riseth against his neighbour, and slayeth him, even so is this matter.”

This verse is part of a larger section in the book of Deuteronomy known as the “Laws Concerning Sexual Morality” (Deuteronomy 22:13-30).

In this passage, God provides regulations and guidelines to the Israelites regarding various aspects of sexual morality, purity, and appropriate behaviour.

In Deuteronomy 22:26, the context refers to a situation where a man lies with a betrothed virgin, who is not engaged to be married yet. The verse states that if the man seizes the woman and lies with her in a field, the man alone shall be put to death, but no punishment or guilt should be placed upon the woman.

Protection of the Innocent:The verse highlights the protection of the innocent party involved, in this case, the young woman. Even though she may have been in a compromising situation, the verse emphasises that she bears no guilt or responsibility for what happened. The emphasis is on safeguarding her innocence and acknowledging that she is not deserving of death or punishment.

Equality and Justice:The verse demonstrates a sense of fairness and justice by treating both genders equally in terms of punishment. The man who committed the act is held accountable for his actions, while the woman is shown mercy and exempted from punishment. This reflects the principle of justice and impartiality in God’s law.

Valuing Human Life:The verse compares the severity of the man’s act with that of murder, stating, “for as when a man riseth against his neighbour, and slayeth him, even so is this matter.” This comparison emphasises the seriousness of the man’s actions and highlights the sanctity of human life.

It’s important to note that while the passage provides specific instructions for the Israelites in a particular cultural and historical context, the underlying principles of justice, mercy, and the value of human life can be applied more broadly.

The passage serves as a reminder of God’s concern for fairness, the protection of the innocent, and the preservation of human dignity.
