Deuteronomy 27:16

Posted on 27 August 2024
Listen to this article

“Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen.”

Context:The book of Deuteronomy is part of the Pentateuch, also known as the Torah, and it contains the farewell speeches of Moses to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. In this specific chapter, Moses commands the people to set up large stones on Mount Ebal upon entering the land, inscribing the words of the law on them as a reminder of their covenant with God.

Meaning of the verse:Deuteronomy 27:16 addresses the fifth commandment found in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:12), which states, “Honor your father and your mother.” It is a solemn warning against showing disrespect or treating one’s parents lightly. The verse emphasizes the seriousness of dishonoring one’s parents by pronouncing a curse upon anyone who does so.

Significance of honoring parents:Honoring parents is a fundamental principle in biblical ethics. The commandment to honor one’s father and mother carries great weight because it establishes the foundation for healthy relationships within the family and society. It promotes respect, gratitude, and care for parents, acknowledging their role in raising and nurturing children. Honoring parents also reflects obedience to God’s authority since He ordained the family structure.

Severity of dishonoring parents:The gravity of dishonoring parents is highlighted by the curse pronounced in this verse. By “setting light” or treating parents with contempt, disrespect, or disregard, an individual brings upon themselves the curse of God. The “Amen” uttered by the people signifies their agreement with God’s judgment against those who fail to honor their parents.

Application for believers:This verse extends beyond the literal act of dishonoring one’s biological parents. It encompasses a broader principle of respecting and honoring authority figures, including spiritual leaders, mentors, and elders. As Christians, we are called to demonstrate honor, love, and care for those who have invested in our lives and provided guidance.

Redemptive grace:It is essential to remember that while Deuteronomy 27:16 emphasizes the consequences of dishonoring parents, God’s desire is for repentance, forgiveness, and restoration. In Christ, believers have access to God’s grace and forgiveness, even if they have previously failed in honoring their parents. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, believers can grow in their ability to demonstrate honor and love in all relationships, including that of parent and child.
