Listen to this article

“And the LORD shall make thee plenteous in goods, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers to give thee.”

Deuteronomy 28 is part of Moses’ farewell address to the Israelites, wherein he outlines the blessings and curses that would come upon the people based on their obedience or disobedience to God’s commandments. This chapter presents the blessings that would be poured out on the Israelites if they followed God’s laws faithfully.

In verse 11, Moses speaks to the Israelites about the abundant blessings that God would bestow upon them in the land He had promised to their forefathers. Let’s break down the key elements of this verse:

Plenteous in goods:God promised that the Israelites would experience material abundance. This includes various forms of prosperity, such as possessions, wealth, and resources necessary for a good quality of life. It signifies God’s favour and provision for His obedient people.

Fruit of thy body:This phrase refers to the increase and prosperity of their offspring. God promised that their families would be blessed with fertility, healthy children, and the growth of their descendants. It reflects God’s desire to bless the generations that follow.

Fruit of thy cattle:This phrase emphasizes the prosperity of their livestock and agricultural pursuits. God assured them that their herds, flocks, and livestock would thrive, resulting in increased wealth and sustenance.

Fruit of thy ground:This phrase pertains to the fertility and productivity of their land. God promised that their crops, fields, and agricultural endeavours would yield bountiful harvests. It signifies the blessing of agricultural abundance and sustenance.

Overall, Deuteronomy 28:11 reflects God’s desire to bless and prosper His obedient people in various aspects of their lives. The verse highlights the material, familial, and agricultural blessings that would be poured out upon the Israelites as they walked in covenant obedience with God.

It is important to note that these blessings were specific to the Israelites under the Old Covenant. However, as Christians, we can draw spiritual lessons from this passage, understanding that God desires to bless His people when they walk in obedience to His will. It reminds us of God’s faithfulness and provision in our lives today.

As you continue your study of Deuteronomy 28, you’ll find that the chapter also contains a list of curses that would befall the Israelites if they turned away from God’s commandments. This serves as a reminder of the importance of obedience and the consequences of disobedience.
